Some parents who sign with their babies are stay-at-home-mothers, while some moms work outside the home. Working presents a unique situation because your baby likely goes to a babysitter for a certain amount of time during the day and he or she may not be aware that you sign with your baby. Even SAHM's can understand the problems that may arise when they leave their babies in the care of a grandmother or favorite aunt for a night out or a baby-free grocery-shopping event.

My husband cares for the children during the day while I'm at school, and he works at night while I'm home. So, I am not intimately familiar with the concerns of those who use outside help on a full-time basis. I do, however, understand how it can be a big concern for those trying to establish signing with the baby and are unsure of how daycare will affect their efforts.

Michelle, located in the UK, put her daughter Rio into full-time day-care at the age of 8 months. "I had mentioned from day one that I was teaching her to sign," she said. "The nursery were very interested in what I was doing and Rio's two main carers borrowed the book and video to watch before she started there full time so that they had an insight into what she was doing." Her experience was a positive one because she had caregivers who were open-minded and positive about baby signing. "On the whole I found that there was a growing interest and very positive approach to baby signing," she said.

Gill, also from the UK, is getting ready to put her 2-year-old daughter Meadow in a day-care setting two days a week. As Meadow is an established signer and no longer a young baby, her concerns are less about the care providers using signs with Meadow and more about Meadow communicating with other children. "We've decided that we won't show the nursery anything more than HELP and a couple of other important signs," she said. "She's 2 years old now and will be in a group of 2- and 3-year-olds who she will interact with, but they won't be using signs."

Hints for consistency between home and day-care:

Let your sitter know from the very beginning that you are signing with your baby.

Demonstrate the signs your baby is likely to use.

Bring along a sign language book or something similar that you can leave with the sitter each day for reference (the SWYB quick reference guide is great for this).

Let your sitter know which signs you're working on and tell her how to use them so your baby can learn new signs at the sitter's too.

Keep the lines of communication open between you and your child's care giver, and invite questions at every opportunity.

With these ideas in mind, baby sitters and care givers will be an added benefit in your child's sign language communication.

Who has the greatest power in all the world? Who can make a prince rakish and cause a princess to fall to her knees? Who is greatly feared by politicians, celebrities, and leaders? Who can overtly or subliminally penetrate your day -time thoughts with images that produce hellish nightmares?. Who can show us limbless soldiers and skeletons popping out of coffins upon a sea of murky misery without concern; oblivious to the power of these images to instantly de-range the mind? Who can judge the famous prior to a court hearing and declare them guilty? Who can isolate and marginalize segments of our society with a few words and a few images? I am sure that by now you know who can make a president a person of loathing no matter what he truly believes? The media can do these things because we have allowed them to. We are afraid of them. They wield the power to make or break anyone, anytime, anywhere. The media have become the soothsayers of our times. Very few question their prognostications after the pundits have extrapolated and peddled their latest books. We are convinced by the "sincere" news commentator who is ready to put on his boxing gloves and fight any and every body who does not conform to his sense of morality. (All the while shamelessly hawking coffee mugs and books.)

The worst culprits of all are the paparazzi. Who really killed Princes Diana? Who makes celebrities wish that they were anonymous and even homeless? Who has turned talented and naturally attractive people into "gods and goddesses" by virtue of their beautiful photographs? Being an idol in this day and age is a very risky thing. Idols are falling. Who is bringing them down? The very same people who built them up. Why are so many people afraid of these stalkers? They peddle celebrities; causing them to have to have numerous bodyguards to protect them from the people that have been whipped into a frenzy because of the latest photos of them. Oh, how they love to see the big star have a public melt-down. Bleary-eyed, teary-eyed stars are visible in a half a dozen magazines, when all regular people want to do is to buy some groceries. Are we dealing with seared consciences at large and in charge?

The question is not why the media have unbridled power, but rather why has the average Joe puts up with it? Why haven't a sea of diverse people risen up and said, "enough is enough. If you do not have any new news, then stop barraging us with the same old news clips 24/7." This of course, will not happen. All of these things are driven by mammon. Brow- beating the famous pays well. What will bring change? My prediction is that the predictions of the Babylonian soothsayers shall fail: the idols are falling like Dagon, before the living God. .

No one knows exactly what causes colic, though many old wives tales abound. Lots of older women will tell you that it is caused by parental inexperience, but colic does not occur more often in first children than in subsequent children, so they One thing that seems clear is that most babies who are experiencing colic have a stomach ache. Many are gassy, though a baby won't cry so inconsolably every time he has gas, so it is clearly gas plus something, though just what is not clear.

Though we don't know what colic really is, it is hard to miss when your child is experiencing it. The inconsolable crying usually begins in the late afternoon or early evening and often lasts until the baby finally falls asleep for the night, exhausted. Colic typically begins between two and three weeks of age, and is over its worst by twelve to sixteen weeks, though there are babies who start later and end later. My daughter started at twelve weeks, but thankfully her bout of colic was over in two weeks. A colicky baby will typically draw his knees up to his chest, clench his fists and scream. He may act like he wants the breast or bottle, but reject it as soon as you it's in his mouth. You will get the sense that your child is frantic, and needs something very badly, but doesn't know what.

If you believe your baby has colic, it is still wise to take him to a doctor. There is no cure for colic, but you should rule out other causes, such as an allergy to formula or some other gastric disorder. Once your doctor has proclaimed the baby healthy, you can chalk it up to colic.

Once you know that your baby has colic, though there is no cure, there are some remedies you can try. Simethicone drops, which are available over the counter as a gas medication for babies, helps in some cases. In addition, there are numerous tricks you can try such as taking a drive in the car or running the vacuum cleaner that will work for some babies some of the time. But, overall, colic is just a waiting game. Keep the baby (and yourself) as calm as possible and look forward to the day when it will be over.
